South African, Capetonian, I am an Arts and Culture teacher grade 8 and 9 and the Dramatic Arts practitioner for Grade 10, 11, 12. When the country was putting its curriculum together I served on the Standards Generating Body for Arts and Culture Based Education. We have chosen to use puppetry as a rite of passage for our grade 9 group (280 of them) and we have attended the international puppet conference held recently in Cape Town. The brief for the grade 9 project was that they script a piece for puppet theatre for an age group younger than themselves dealing with morality, values, health, education or environment. My interest has developed in using learners to teach learners. The Grade 10 group is required to present African Narrative Theatre to the feeder primary schools in our suburbs. |
